Type 1 Diabetes
What is type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is a serious condition characterised by elevated blood glucose levels due to the body's inability to produce insulin — a hormone required to regulate blood sugar levels.
This condition arises when the body's immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas responsible for insulin production, resulting in a complete deficiency of insulin.
Insulin plays a vital role by allowing glucose from the bloodstream to enter the body's cells and provide energy. In individuals with type 1 diabetes, glucose cannot enter the cells due to the lack of insulin, causing glucose to accumulate in the bloodstream and leading to high blood sugar levels.
What causes type 1 diabetes?
The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is still unknown. It is unrelated to diet or lifestyle factors. Researchers worldwide, including our own, are actively working to unravel the underlying causes.
